A home cinema that sounds bad is a room problem, not a speaker problem. More expensive speakers in an untreated room still sound poor. Basic speakers in a well-treated room sound dramatically better. The science is straightforward: you're trying to control reverberation (echo making audio muddy), flutter echo (sharp reflections between parallel walls), and bass buildup (low frequencies accumulating in room corners).

What reverberation time should a home cinema target?

The industry standard for a dedicated home cinema room is 0.3-0.5 seconds reverberation time. A bare room with plasterboard walls typically runs 0.6-1.0 seconds. The difference is audible - speech clarity, musical separation, and surround sound localisation all improve as you approach the 0.3-0.5 s target.

Where should I treat a home cinema?

Side walls first: the first reflections from the left and right speakers arrive at your ears a split second after the direct sound. Treatment at the first reflection point on each side wall is the highest-priority acoustic intervention in any listening room. To find the first reflection point, sit in the main listening position and have someone move a mirror along the side wall until you can see the speaker in it - that's the first reflection point.

Rear wall second: in a home cinema, reflections from the rear wall reach the listener after the surround sound direct signal and muddy the surround imaging. Treatment here improves the surround sound experience significantly.

Front wall (behind the screen): light treatment only - you want some reflections from the front wall to add space and air to the presentation. Heavy absorption at the front makes the sound seem to collapse into the screen.

Ceiling: treat the section directly above the main listening position.

What products work for home cinema acoustic treatment?

Wood slat acoustic panels work well for side and rear walls - they're visually appropriate in cinema interiors and acoustically effective in the speech frequency range. For better bass control (frequencies below 200 Hz), add thicker absorbers behind the main panel or corner bass traps. Most home cinema rooms need 100 mm+ of absorptive material depth for meaningful bass control - a standard wood slat panel on the wall isn't enough.
