What Are Acoustic Wall Panels? A Guide for Homeowners and Interior Designers

What Are Acoustic Wall Panels?

Acoustic wall panels are wall-mounted surfaces designed to absorb sound energy rather than reflecting it. Hard surfaces - plaster, glass, concrete, ceramic tile - bounce sound around a room. When too much sound bounces, you get echo and reverberation: the room feels loud, speech is harder to understand, and music sounds muddy. Acoustic panels interrupt that cycle.

How do acoustic wall panels work?

Sound is mechanical energy. When a sound wave hits a hard surface, most of the energy reflects back into the room. When it hits a soft or porous surface, the energy is converted into a small amount of heat - the technical term is absorption. Acoustic panels are made from materials with high absorption coefficients: felt, foam, compressed mineral wool, or in the case of wood slat panels, a combination of timber surface and acoustic backing.

The effectiveness of a panel is measured by its NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient), a number between 0 and 1. An NRC of 0.8 means the panel absorbs 80% of sound that hits it. For reference, bare plaster has an NRC of around 0.02. A good acoustic panel runs 0.5–0.9 NRC depending on frequency range and construction.

Where are acoustic wall panels used?

Home applications: home offices (video call echo), home cinema rooms, music practice rooms, living rooms with hard floors and sparse furniture. Commercial applications: restaurants, recording studios, offices, hotel corridors, conference rooms.

The rooms that benefit most are those with lots of hard parallel surfaces - two plasterboard walls facing each other, a tiled floor, a glass window opposite. These surfaces ping sound back and forth between them. A panel on one wall breaks the reflection path.

What types of acoustic panels are there?

  • Fabric-wrapped panels: high NRC, functional, often used in recording studios
  • Foam panels: cheap, high NRC, not decorative
  • Felt panels: decorative and functional, popular in offices
  • Wood slat acoustic panels: the best balance of acoustic performance and visual appeal - sound passes through the slat gaps into acoustic backing material

WallPanelsPRO stocks the wood slat acoustic panel range, including WavySlats, which adds a three-dimensional profile to the standard slat format.
