What Is SPC Wall Panelling? A Plain Guide for Specifiers

SPC wall panelling is a rigid, large-format sheet with a stone-polymer composite core and a printed, coated decorative surface. It gets specified where a wall has to be genuinely waterproof, tolerate repeated cleaning with strong chemicals, and survive knocks: bathrooms, wet rooms, hotel corridors, changing rooms, commercial kitchens and healthcare interiors. This guide covers what the material actually is, how it behaves next to the other wall products we sell, and who it suits.

What is stone polymer composite?

SPC stands for stone polymer composite. The core is a dense mix of limestone powder and PVC with stabilisers, extruded into a rigid board. The mineral filler gives the material its density and dimensional stability. The polymer binder is what makes it non-porous. Above the core sits a printed decorative layer and a transparent wear coating that carries the scratch, stain and UV resistance.

The load-bearing word is rigid. The core does not flex, does not stretch, and will not conform to a curve. That is a real limitation in some applications and the entire point of the material in others. A rigid, closed core is what lets a panel sit inside a shower enclosure without a substrate that can wick water behind the finish.

How does SPC differ from flexible MCM tile?

Our flexible MCM stone tiles are a completely different material. MCM is modified clay: thin, flexible sheets of mineral clay on a fabric backing, roughly 3mm thick and light enough to be hung on substrates that could not carry stone. They bend around columns and curved walls, and their surface texture is genuinely convincing as stone.

What MCM is not is a wet-zone material. It is a decorative finish for dry walls. We do not recommend it near a shower, behind a hob, or on any surface that gets cleaned with harsh chemicals. SPC is the answer for those positions. The full comparison, room by room, is in SPC vs MCM flexible tile.

How does SPC differ from ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain tile is still the reference material for wet zones, and we say so plainly in our bathroom wall panel guide. The difference is not primarily performance. It is grout, weight and programme.

  • Grout joints are the maintenance liability in a tiled wet room. They stain, they harbour mould, and they need periodic raking out and replacing. A 2900mm SPC sheet crosses a full wall height with no horizontal joint and no grout at all.
  • Tiling a shower enclosure is a multi-day wet trade with setting time between stages. SPC is a dry fix a two-person team completes in a fraction of that, which matters when rooms are out of service.
  • SPC is lighter per square metre than tile plus adhesive plus backer board, so it suits substrates that would need reinforcing for a tiled finish.

Ceramic still wins on surface hardness and on heat. SPC is a polymer-based product and should not be used as a direct hob splashback or against a heat source.

Why is SPC waterproof rather than water-resistant?

Water resistance is a tolerance claim: the material copes with humidity and occasional splashing. Waterproof means water does not pass through it at all and it does not change dimension when wet. The SPC core has no porosity and no organic content, so a sheet can sit in standing water indefinitely without swelling, delaminating or growing anything.

The panel is waterproof. The wall is only waterproof if the junctions are detailed correctly. Sheet-to-sheet joints, internal corners and the junction with a tray or bath need a suitable sealant, and that detailing is where wet-zone installations fail. What formats and thicknesses are supplied?

Tysten SPC is stocked in two sheet sizes and two standard thicknesses:

  • 2400 x 1200 mm - 2.88 m2 per sheet
  • 2900 x 1200 mm - 3.48 m2 per sheet
  • 3mm and 4mm as the standard thicknesses
  • 4mm and 4.5mm click-system variants available by request through the contact form

The 2900mm sheet is the one that matters for specification. It reaches full storey height in most European interiors, so a bathroom or corridor wall can be clad with vertical joints only. The click-system variants suit dry, demountable installations where a mechanical fix is preferred over adhesive.

What finishes are in the range?

Six series, 33 panels in total: Granite, Slate, Sandstone, Travertine, Line Series and Wood. Stone-effect finishes dominate the range because that is what wet zones and hospitality interiors call for. Granite 8081 is the bright white reference panel for light-critical bathrooms; Slate 8650 is the dark counterpoint. The whole range sits in the Tysten SPC collection.

Who is SPC wall panelling for?

Trade buyers. Tysten SPC is a bulk product with a minimum order of 100 sheets, delivered direct to site or to a contractor yard. That is 288 m2 in the 2400mm format or 348 m2 in the 2900mm format. Ordering terms are on the Tysten SPC page.

That MOQ makes the material a natural fit for architects, main contractors and fit-out firms working at project scale: a hotel floor, a gym changing block, a housing scheme with 40 identical bathrooms. It is not a single-room retail purchase, and we would rather say that up front than have someone order 100 sheets for one en suite.

Where is SPC the wrong choice?

If the wall is curved, SPC will not follow it and flexible MCM tile will. If you need acoustic absorption, SPC is a hard, reflective surface that contributes nothing and you want a fibrous material instead. If the surface is a direct heat source such as a cooker splashback, specify glass or ceramic. And if the project is one bathroom in one house, the MOQ makes SPC the wrong commercial fit even where it is the right technical answer.
