Wood Wool Panels at Home: Living Rooms, Bedrooms and Home Cinema
For decades wood wool cement board lived in schools, sports halls and offices. Then interiors moved toward texture, raw materials and quiet, and the panel known across Europe as fibrolite started appearing in houses and apartments. It suits homes for the same reasons it suits public buildings: it genuinely absorbs sound, it is hard to damage, and its woven surface is a finish in its own right. Here is where it earns its place domestically.
The open plan echo problem
Modern homes are acoustically hostile: open kitchen-living layouts, glass, concrete ceilings, hard floors and minimal soft furnishing. The result is the familiar clatter where a TV, a dishwasher and a conversation compete. A treated zone of 15 to 20 percent of the floor area, usually as a ceiling field over the seating area or a full feature wall, drops the reverberation audibly. Dinner guests will not know why the room feels calm; they will just stay longer.
Design-wise, a wood wool ceiling field in Natural or White reads as texture rather than technology, closer to a timber surface than to an acoustic product. The 2400 x 600 format lays up fast into clean linear bands.
Bedrooms
Bedrooms need less coverage: even 2 to 3 m2 behind the bed as a headboard wall softens the room noticeably and looks deliberate. Because the panel is cement bonded, it does not off-gas the way some foam absorbers can, a point light sleepers tend to care about.
Home cinema and media rooms
This is the natural habitat. A media room wants controlled reverberation, some low frequency management and surfaces that tolerate being in the dark with speakers mounted through them:
- Treat the front wall around and behind the screen and the first reflection points on side walls and ceiling.
- Mount panels on battens with a 30 to 50 mm cavity, optionally filled with mineral wool, to extend absorption downward into the frequencies where small rooms boom.
- Black panels around a projection screen also do double duty by killing light reflections.
- Aim higher than the living room target: 30 percent of floor area and up. A dedicated cinema can treat most of the front half of the room.
The panel takes speaker brackets and screws without crumbling, which foam and fabric systems handle badly.
Hallways, stairs and home offices
Stairwells and corridors funnel noise between floors; a run of panels on the stair ceiling is a cheap intervention with an outsized effect. Living with the material
- Robustness: it survives children, vacuum cleaner handles and furniture moves. Scuffs can be touched up with spray paint; a truly damaged panel unscrews and swaps.
- Dust: the surface does not shed and can be vacuumed with a brush head.
- Healthy building: spruce fibre, cement and water; PEFC certified timber; no foam, no fibreglass, no adhesive binders.
- Fire: B-s1,d0 classification, a level of documentation few decorative wall finishes at home can show.
