How to Spot Poplar Cored Plywood Sold as Birch

Our sheets are birch in every ply, 1.5 mm, cross bonded, from the Stiga RM mill in Kuldiga, Latvia. Density around 680 kg/m3. Phenol formaldehyde glue, EN 636-2S uncoated and EN 636-3S film faced. A thickness tolerance we publish per nominal. E1, CARB Phase 2 and EPA TSCA Title VI, certificates attached to the quotation.

Buyers put three other things next to that. One of them is a substitution you can catch in ten seconds with a saw.

Poplar cored sheets sold as birch

Poplar plywood is a real product, and light interior work is what it is for. Mill data puts it around 450 kg/m3 average in 15 mm, a merchant datasheet gives 420, and ultralight sandwich constructions are published as low as 227. Those mill datasheets declare EN 636 Class 1, interior dry conditions, and the merchant sheet lists bonding Class 1. Neither is an exterior panel.

Birch faced plywood over a poplar or eucalyptus core is an openly marketed category and manufacturers describe it as that, which is honest trading. The problem is the sheet that arrives as "birch plywood", at a price that looks like a win, with birch outside and something softer in the middle.

Cut one through and look at the edge.

Our edge. A uniform pale stripe, every ply the same colour and much the same thickness. Ours are 1.5 mm, and a Finnish mill handbook gives the normal nominal range for birch and spruce veneer as 1.4 to 2.0 mm.

The substituted edge. Lighter, greyer or greener in the middle, thicker and less even, birch showing as the outer one or two plies. Cut the sheet rather than reading a factory trimmed edge, which may have been dressed to look right.

Voids. Hold the cut edge to the light and look for gaps in the core plies. Ours have none. A cutter that breaks into a void leaves a hole nobody can fill, which scraps the sheet on a visible edge. A fastener landing in one has nothing to grip, and the failure moves around the sheet, so you cannot design around it. A void is also a discontinuity in a ply the design assumes continuous, and declared bending values assume a sound cross section.

The declaration, not the description. A panel cannot carry an EN 636 use class higher than the EN 314 bonding class it was assessed to. If a supplier calls a panel exterior and the declaration says Class 1, the declaration wins. Ours are EN 636-2S uncoated, EN 636-3S film faced, on a Declaration of Performance against EN 13986.

If the load is going to the United States

Under EPA TSCA Title VI, hardwood plywood sold into the United States must meet a formaldehyde limit of 0.05 ppm, be third party certified by an EPA recognised certifier before entry into US commerce, and carry a label with the producer's name, the lot number, the certifier's TSCA Title VI number and a compliance statement. Non compliant panels cannot lawfully be imported, sold or distributed. California's regulator states that the CARB and TSCA Title VI standards are identical and that both require third party verification and panel labelling.

A sheet without that paperwork does not enter the market, whatever its core. We hold all three, the certificates come with the quotation, and the certifier number is yours on request. None of it can be fixed after the container lands.

Softwood plywood

Pine or spruce plywood costs less per cubic metre than birch and holds fasteners worse. Density is the mechanism. Finnish Wood Information publishes conifer plywood at 460 to 520 kg/m3 against birch at approximately 680, and PEFC reference values at 12% moisture content put Norway spruce at 460 and Scots pine at 550 against birch at 660. For sheathing, hoarding and hidden structural work, softwood does the job.

We do not stock it.

Finnish birch plywood

Same species, same cross grain construction, same published numbers. A Finnish mill handbook gives birch plywood a mean density of 680 kg/m3 and a characteristic 630 at 65% relative humidity, Finnish Wood Information gives approximately 680, ours is published at approximately 680. That handbook states its phenol formaldehyde glued plywood meets EN 314-2 class 3 and its overlaid, edge sealed products EN 636-3. We are not going to argue the material.

What differs is how the load gets put together.

  • Mixed grades and thicknesses in one load, confirmed at quotation. BB/BB, BB/CP and film faced on the same truck.
  • Thicknesses off the standard list quoted: 6.5 to 40 mm, 6.5 to 35 mm film faced. Same for the 1220 x 2440 mm format, 220 g/m2 film and FSC Mix.
  • A factory production slot, because the mill produces to order.
  • No distributor layer between the mill and your yard, and no distributor margin in the number.

Densities are kg/m3, tolerances mm. Where no figure appears in a mill datasheet, a Declaration of Performance or trade body material, the cell says it varies by producer. We will not guess another mill's numbers, and nobody should quote you a competitor's tolerance without a source.

The four things we declare in writing

Every quotation answers all four, in writing, before you order.

  1. Is every ply birch? Yes. Birch throughout, 1.5 mm, cross bonded, no poplar and no softwood core, and the cut edge shows it.
  2. What is the declared thickness tolerance? 15 mm is 14.3 to 15.3 mm, 18 mm is 17.1 to 18.7 mm, 21 mm is 20.0 to 21.5 mm. Wide, asymmetric and published, which is more than most importers put on paper.
  3. Which bonding class to EN 314 and which use class to EN 636? EN 636-2S uncoated, EN 636-3S film faced, on a Declaration of Performance naming EN 13986, with CE and UKCA marking.
  4. CARB Phase 2 and TSCA Title VI? Both held, with E1 to EN 717-1, PEFC chain of custody, IKEA IOS-MAT-0181 and F4 for Japan on the uncoated grades. Certificates attached, certifier number on request.

Moisture content on despatch is 10% plus or minus 2%, and every sheet comes from one mill, so the second delivery matches the first.

Now ask whoever else is quoting for the same four, in writing. What comes back, or does not, tells you what the other number on your desk is for.

Get a price

Tell us the grade, the thickness, the square metres and the delivery address. You get a pack count, a price and the certificates, grades and thicknesses mixed on one load if you need them. Minimum order is half a truck, about 8 packs. Full trucks go across Europe, containers worldwide.

There is no stock and production runs up to 3 weeks depending on season, so material needed within days is a merchant's job and we will say so.

Our own figures come from the Stiga RM product pages and repeat on each product page. We found no published thickness tolerance for softwood, poplar or Finnish birch plywood from a source we would cite, and no numerical void limit for any of the four, so both stay marked as varying by producer.

The six grades: BB/BB and BB/CP for visible faces, CP/CP for covered and structural work, C/C for crates and protection, F/F for formwork and F/W for floors and ramps.
