It reads best under directional lighting - a wall washer or picture light raking across the slats brings out the subtle grain that a flat, evenly-lit room can flatten out. Because the finish absorbs light rather than reflecting it, it works well as a backdrop for brass, brushed steel or matte black hardware, and pairs naturally with concrete, dark stone and exposed brick in industrial-style interiors. In smaller or north-facing rooms with limited natural light, balance a Black Ash wall with a lighter floor or ceiling rather than surrounding it with more dark surfaces, or the room can start to feel enclosed. Dust with a dry cloth along the grain; the dark veneer shows dust more readily than lighter finishes, so more frequent light cleaning keeps the surface looking considered rather than neglected.
