What actually damages a wall panel outdoors?

Three things: direct UV exposure fading or degrading the surface over time, freeze-thaw cycling causing moisture trapped in the material to expand and crack it, and standing water where a panel meets the ground or a horizontal surface. A panel can be rated for occasional rain and still fail under one of these three.

Which materials are actually exterior-rated?

Not all of them, and not by default - a material sold for interior use isn't automatically safe outdoors just because it tolerates humidity. Fixing methods for an outdoor substrate

Exterior fixing needs to account for movement - thermal expansion and contraction is more extreme outdoors than inside a temperature-controlled room. Follow the exterior-specific fixing guidance for whichever material you choose rather than using an interior fixing method outside; it's a common cause of early failure on small outdoor projects.
