A co-working space usually has three or four different acoustic needs living inside one floor plan - open desks, phone booths, meeting rooms, and communal areas - and treating the whole space the same way rarely works well for all of them.

Different zones, different acoustic needs

Open desk areas benefit from wood wool or felt on ceilings and back walls to control general noise bleed between members. Phone booths and small meeting pods need denser absorption in a small volume to stop sound carrying straight through to the next desk. Communal and reception areas are more about look than acoustic performance.

Balancing brand-visible finishes with pure performance

Reception and communal walls are where a wood slat feature wall or MCM stone finish earns its place - visible, on-brand, and the first thing a visiting client sees. Save the pure-performance felt and wood wool for the areas doing the acoustic heavy lifting, where looks matter less than function.

Getting the split right

The mistake to avoid is spending the whole acoustic budget on a striking reception wall and leaving the open desk area - where most of the actual noise complaints come from - untreated. Budget for both, even if the desk-area treatment is the less photogenic of the two.
