Buying Wall Panels in the EU: What to Check Before You Order

A significant share of the wall panel products available online ship from China. Many are good products, competitively priced, and arrive in reasonable condition. Many are also 6-12 weeks away, arrive with a customs bill, and are impossible to return if the colour is wrong or a panel is damaged.

What EU-stocked means for a project

Lead time: EU warehouse to EU customer is typically 3-10 working days depending on destination. China to EU is 4-10 weeks by sea, or 2-3 weeks by air (significantly more expensive). For a kitchen renovation or a commercial interior fit-out with a programme to hit, this difference determines whether the project finishes on time.

Import duty and VAT: goods shipped from outside the EU are subject to customs duty (typically 3-6% for building materials) plus VAT at the destination country rate, paid at import. This adds to the landed cost and creates a delay while customs clears the shipment. EU-stocked products have already cleared customs - VAT is charged at point of sale as standard.

Returns and claims: returning damaged goods to a Chinese manufacturer is practically impossible for small quantities. EU-based suppliers are bound by EU consumer and commercial law - you have a clear legal route if goods arrive damaged or don't match the description.

What to check on the product listing

"Ships from EU" or "EU warehouse" in the listing. VAT included in the price (indicates EU-registered seller). A returns address in an EU country. CE marking where required (flexible tile for external use, fire-rated panels for commercial use). A phone number or email address that answers.
