SPC vs MCM Flexible Tile: Which Wall Panel for Which Room

We sell both, which is why this comparison can be honest: there is no outcome where you buy the wrong thing and we are pleased about it. Flexible MCM stone tile and Tysten SPC panelling look similar on a moodboard and are almost opposites as materials. One is a thin, bendable decorative skin. The other is a rigid waterproof board. Choosing between them is a question of what the wall has to survive, not what it has to look like.

What are the two materials?

MCM flexible tile is modified clay material: natural mineral clay formed into thin sheets around 3mm thick on a fabric backing, cured at low temperature. It is light, it bends around columns and curved walls, and the surface texture reads convincingly as travertine, slate or rammed earth because it is moulded from real stone.

Tysten SPC is stone polymer composite: limestone powder bound in PVC and extruded into a rigid, non-porous board, with a printed decorative layer and a wear coating over it. It comes in 2400 x 1200 mm and 2900 x 1200 mm sheets at 3mm and 4mm, with click-system variants at 4mm and 4.5mm by request. The full material explanation is in what is SPC wall panelling.

Which one is actually waterproof?

SPC. Without qualification. The core has no porosity and no organic content, so it can sit in standing water without swelling or delaminating.

MCM is water-resistant in the sense that a splash will not destroy it, and that is where the claim stops. Our position, stated the same way in our bathroom wall panel guide, is that MCM flexible tile is a dry accent-wall material. We do not recommend it in a shower enclosure, on a bath surround, behind a hob, or on any wall that will be cleaned with harsh chemicals. Repeated water contact and aggressive cleaning degrade the surface and the joints over time regardless of what a lab-condition spec sheet says.

That is not a criticism of MCM. It is a product doing the job it was designed for. It just is not the job a shower wall needs doing.

Which panel for which room?

Room by room, this is how we would specify:

  • Shower enclosure, wet room, bath surround (Zone 0 and Zone 1) - SPC, or full ceramic tile. Never MCM.
  • Bathroom vanity wall or feature wall away from the spray zone - MCM if the texture is what you want. SPC if the room is a commercial washroom being hosed and chemically cleaned.
  • Kitchen splashback behind a hob - neither. Glass or ceramic. SPC is polymer-based and belongs away from direct heat; MCM should not be there at all.
  • Kitchen walls away from the hob - either works. MCM for the look, SPC where grease cleaning is constant.
  • Living room, bedroom, hallway feature wall - MCM. This is its home ground and it does it better than SPC.
  • Curved wall or column - MCM only. SPC is rigid and will not follow the radius.
  • Hotel corridor, gym changing room, healthcare corridor, commercial washroom - SPC. Covered in detail in SPC wall panels for commercial fit-outs.

Which looks better?

MCM, on a dry wall, at close range. It is moulded from real stone, so the surface relief is three-dimensional and the texture survives inspection from half a metre away. SPC carries a printed decor under a coating: excellent at normal viewing distance, and clearly a print if you go looking.

SPC wins on continuity. A 2900mm sheet clads a full storey height with no horizontal joint, so a bathroom wall reads as one uninterrupted surface. MCM is laid as individual tiles with joints, which is part of its character but does mean joints. Travertine 1545 shows how the large format handles a stone pattern across a full wall.

How do they compare on installation?

MCM goes up like a tile: adhesive, individual pieces, jointing, and a fair amount of setting-out. It is a slow, careful trade, described in our flexible stone veneer installation guide.

SPC is a sheet material. Fewer, larger pieces mean less setting-out, but each sheet needs two people and the cutting has to be accurate because there is no grout joint to absorb a mistake. Wet-zone junction sealing decides whether the installation succeeds. See how to install SPC wall panels.

How do the buying models differ?

This is often the deciding factor, and it has nothing to do with the material.

MCM tiles are sold by the square metre. You can order enough for one feature wall and have it delivered to a house. SPC is a trade and bulk product: minimum order 100 sheets, which is 288 m2 in the 2400mm format or 348 m2 in the 2900mm format, delivered to site or to a contractor yard. So a homeowner refitting one bathroom cannot buy SPC at a sensible quantity, even though it is the technically correct material for the shower wall. There the honest answer is ceramic in the wet zone and MCM on the dry feature wall. For a contractor cladding 40 bathrooms, the MOQ is not an obstacle and SPC becomes the obvious specification.

What about ceramic tile?

Ceramic remains the default for wet zones in single-room domestic work, and it is harder-wearing at the surface than either panel product. Against SPC, the trade is straightforward: ceramic for surface hardness and heat tolerance, SPC for speed, seamlessness and no grout to maintain.

The short version

If the wall gets wet or gets scrubbed, specify SPC. If the wall is dry and the texture is the point, specify MCM. If the wall is curved, MCM is your only option. If you need one bathroom's worth of material, SPC is not the right purchase whatever the wall needs.
