How to Install Flexible Stone Veneer: Step-by-Step Guide for EU Conditions

How to Install Flexible Stone Veneer

What tools do you need to install flexible stone veneer?

Utility knife, rubber float or pressure board, notched trowel, roller (15–20 kg), level, tape measure, alkali-resistant flexible tile adhesive, flexible primer (for absorbent substrates), silicone gun for joints.

Step 1: Assess the substrate

The substrate must be clean, dry, stable, and load-bearing. Existing paint, dust, or old adhesive residue will reduce bond strength - clean back to bare substrate or use a bonding primer. Check for loose render or hollow sections by tapping - anything hollow needs cutting out and repairing before tiling. Maximum acceptable surface undulation: 5 mm over a 2-metre span. Larger deviations: fill and level first.

Step 2: Prime (if needed)

On absorbent surfaces (bare plaster, lime render, AAC blockwork), apply a roller-coat of flexible primer. Let it dry fully - typically 2–4 hours at 18–20°C. In cold conditions (below 15°C), allow longer drying time. On non-absorbent surfaces (painted walls, glass, metal, existing ceramic), skip primer and go directly to adhesive.

Step 3: Mix and apply adhesive

Use alkali-resistant flexible tile adhesive. Mix to manufacturer specification (usually a creamy consistency with no lumps). Apply to the wall with a notched trowel. For exterior or wet-room applications, apply adhesive to both wall and panel back (full coverage - no spot application). For interior decorative walls, wall-only application is acceptable. Spread only as much adhesive as you can cover in 20 minutes - open time varies by temperature.

Step 4: Position panels

Dry-lay panels before adhesive application to check alignment and plan cuts. Work from the centre of the wall outward, or from the most visible corner. Press each panel firmly from the centre outward to release air pockets. Do not slide panels after placement - this smears adhesive and reduces bond.

Step 5: Roll and press

Once a section is placed, roll the entire surface with a 15–20 kg roller. Apply consistent pressure. For curves, use a rubber float instead of a roller and press in sections. Wait 20–30 minutes, then roll again. This second pass ensures full bond, especially on panels that have relaxed slightly after initial placement.

Step 6: Trim

Cut flexible tile with an angle grinder fitted with a diamond disc - the same setup used for porcelain or natural stone. The material is roughly 98% mineral content and cuts accordingly. For straight cuts, score a guide line first. For curved cuts around sockets, corners, or pillar bases, work freehand with the grinder. Leave a 2–3 mm gap at edges and corners for grouting.

Step 7: Joint treatment

Interior flat walls: panels can butt tight with no treatment. Interior wet rooms or exterior: fill movement joints and perimeter gaps with cement-based flexible grout. Do not use rigid grout - it will crack under thermal or substrate movement.

How do you install flexible stone veneer in cold weather below 10°C?

Apply adhesive only when both substrate and air temperature are above +5°C. At low temperatures, adhesive cures slowly and may not achieve full strength if temperatures drop before cure is complete. Apply during the warmest part of the day. Protect freshly bonded exterior panels from freezing for 48 hours using insulating sheeting if necessary. Never apply adhesive to a frost-covered or wet substrate.

How long does flexible stone veneer take to cure?

Light indoor use: 24 hours. Full bond strength for exterior or wet environments: 72 hours. Do not expose newly bonded exterior panels to rain for 24 hours.
