Wood Wool Acoustics in Pools, Spas and Wellness Rooms

Few rooms sound worse untreated than a swimming pool hall. Water, glass and tile reflect almost everything, ceilings are high, and the result is a wash of noise where a single shout rings for seconds. It is no accident that when you look up in older European swimming halls, you very often see the woven texture of wood wool cement board. The material, known regionally as fibrolite, has been solving exactly this problem since the mid twentieth century. Here is why it works and how to specify it for wet and humid spaces today.

The acoustic problem over water

A pool hall combines three difficulties: large hard surface area, high ceilings and long reverberation that makes lifeguard instructions genuinely hard to understand. Because the water itself can never be treated, the ceiling carries nearly all of the acoustic duty. That calls for an absorber that can cover a large area economically, survive the environment, and keep performing for decades. Soft tiles and fabric absorbers fail the environment test; that is the gap wood wool fills.

Why wood wool tolerates humid rooms

Wood wool cement board is timber fibre mineralised and bound in cement. The cement matrix means the panel does not sag with humidity the way soft mineral fibre tiles do, does not warp like untreated timber, and offers no easy food for mould. Panels ride through the daily humidity swings of a wellness environment without changing shape. It is the same logic that puts cement-bonded boards behind tiles in bathrooms, applied to an acoustic surface.

Two honest caveats belong in any specification:

• Condensation is the real enemy, not humidity. A ventilated pool hall at 55 to 65 percent relative humidity is comfortable territory for wood wool. Surfaces cold enough to run with condensate are a problem for every material and point to a ventilation issue that panels will not fix.
• Chlorine attacks fixings first. In pool atmospheres, specify stainless steel screws of an appropriate grade for chlorinated environments and corrosion-protected battens or grid. The panel outlives a bad screw.

Spas, saunas surroundings and treatment rooms

Beyond the pool itself, wellness suites are full of smaller rooms that benefit: massage and treatment rooms where a calm, dry acoustic matters, relaxation lounges, changing areas with their clatter of lockers and hard floors. A 25 mm Sonablock panel on the ceiling changes the character of these rooms immediately. Darker panel colours, Dark Grey or Black, suit the low-light aesthetic most spas aim for, and the natural texture fits the material palette of timber benches and stone.

The one place wood wool does not belong is inside the sauna cabin itself, where surface temperatures exceed what any acoustic specification requires; treat the room outside the cabin instead.

Specification pointers for wet-area projects

• Thickness: 25 mm as the default; step up the cavity depth rather than the panel where more low frequency absorption is needed.
• Coverage: pool halls typically want the large majority of the ceiling treated; the room calculation used for offices scales up here because of the height and hard finishes.
• Fire: Sonablock carries B-s1,d0 to EN 13501-1, with CE marking under EN 13168, documentation public buildings will ask for.
• Colour: White and Light Grey keep tall halls bright and are the usual pick over water; both are factory finishes so absorption is preserved.
• Logistics: pool ceilings are pallet-scale projects. One pallet of 25 mm panels covers 30.96 m2, so a mid-size hall is usually a clean multi-pallet order.

Retrofits

Many municipal pools built in the 1970s and 1980s already have wood wool ceilings, sometimes painted many times over. If the panels are sound, a light spray repaint refreshes them. If they are clogged with paint or damaged, like-for-like replacement with modern panels restores the original acoustic intent with better fire documentation, and the visual character of the hall stays intact.
