Acoustic Panels for Schools: Reducing Classroom Echo with Wood Wool

Classrooms, gyms and corridors are some of the most acoustically demanding spaces in any building. Hard walls and ceilings bounce sound around, raising background noise and making it harder for pupils to hear and concentrate. Wood wool cement board (WWCB) acoustic panels are one of the most widely specified solutions for education projects — and for good reasons that go beyond sound.

Why wood wool panels suit schools

• Sound absorption where it matters. WWCB absorbs mid- and high-frequency sound — the range of speech — cutting reverberation and echo. Sonablock achieves a weighted absorption coefficient of αw 0.70–0.85 depending on mounting and fibre size.
• Fire safety. Schools have strict fire requirements, especially on escape routes. Sonablock is certified Class B-s1,d0 to EN 13501-1 — low smoke, no flaming droplets.
• Impact durability. The cement-bonded surface is far tougher than soft foam or fabric panels, which matters in busy corridors, gyms and sports halls where panels take knocks.
• Healthy material. Mineral-bonded wood wool has no VOC off-gassing and is made from PEFC-certified spruce — important for indoor air quality in spaces full of children.
• Low maintenance. Boards do not rot, swell or sag and tolerate humidity, suitable for changing rooms and covered outdoor areas.

Where to use them

WWCB works on both walls and ceilings. Typical school applications: classrooms (ceiling rafts or full ceilings), sports and assembly halls (large-area ceilings and high-level wall absorption), music rooms, libraries, dining halls and noisy circulation corridors. For maximum low-frequency absorption, mount panels with a 25–50 mm air gap behind them.
