If you are specifying acoustic ceilings or walls in Europe, Troldtekt and Heraklith are usually the first wood wool cement board (WWCB) names that come up. They are well-established, well-documented products. But they are not the only WWCB on the market, and for many projects a like-for-like alternative delivers the same acoustic and fire performance at better value. This guide explains what WWCB actually is, what to check before you switch, and where Sonablock fits.

What is wood wool cement board (WWCB)?

WWCB is made from long-strand wood wool (usually spruce) bound with Portland cement. The mineral binder makes the board dimensionally stable, moisture-tolerant and free of VOC off-gassing, while the open fibrous surface absorbs mid- and high-frequency sound. It is the material behind most "wood wool" acoustic ceilings you see in schools, sports halls and offices. Troldtekt, Heraklith, CEWOOD and Sonablock are all WWCB products built on the same basic principle.

What actually matters when choosing a WWCB supplier

Architects rarely ask "who is cheapest?" They ask "can I specify this without risk?" So the real comparison points are:

• Fire classification. Look for a documented EN 13501-1 rating. Standard Sonablock is certified Class B-s1,d0 (low smoke, no flaming droplets), suitable for escape routes and public buildings. Where a project mandates non-combustible, the Sonablock FireSafe series is classified A2-s1,d0 in accordance with EN 13168:2012+A1:2015, available across all formats and thicknesses. FireSafe is not listed online yet, so request it through the contact form.
• Acoustic data, quoted on a stated build-up. A weighted absorption coefficient is only meaningful alongside what sits behind the panel. Sonablock reaches αw 0.60 to 0.65, Absorption Class C, tested to EN ISO 354 by RISE Research Institutes of Sweden (report O100282), as a bare panel with a 200 mm air gap. As with all WWCB, absorption rises substantially with mineral wool added in the cavity, and published data across the category shows Class A build-ups achieved that way. When you see a headline figure quoted as "up to 1.00" from any manufacturer, that is a composite build-up, not a bare board.
• Certifications. CE marking, an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and PEFC/FSC chain-of-custody are what get a product through a specification. Sonablock carries CE, EPD (EPD-IES-0031288) and PEFC (BMCERT-PEFC-COC-00175).
• Sizes and finishes. Check available thicknesses, panel sizes and colours. Sonablock comes in 15 mm and 25 mm (35 mm on request), sizes to 2400 × 600 mm, three fibre textures (1.0 / 1.5 / 2.0 mm) and five colours plus custom RAL/NCS and printed panels.
• Supply and lead time. Many WWCB brands route everything through "request a quote." A distributor with transparent pricing and stock-to-order shortens the cycle.
