SPC Wall Panels for Commercial Fit-Outs

Commercial wall finishes fail in predictable ways. Grout in a hotel bathroom goes grey and mouldy in three years. A changing room wall gets hosed daily until the substrate behind the tile gives up. A corridor dado takes trolley impacts until the plasterboard is visible. SPC wall panelling is specified on fit-outs because it removes most of those failure modes at once, and because a sheet product installs on a programme that tiling cannot match.

What makes SPC suit commercial interiors?

Three properties, in order of how often they decide the specification.

  • It is genuinely waterproof. The stone polymer composite core is non-porous with no organic content, so it does not swell, delaminate or support mould growth. That is what makes it viable in shower rooms, changing blocks, pool surrounds and commercial washrooms rather than merely humid spaces.
  • It survives cleaning regimes. Commercial hygiene schedules are not domestic. Surfaces get chemical cleaners daily, sometimes hourly. The coated SPC surface is non-porous and has no grout lines, so there is nothing for the cleaning to attack and nothing to harbour bacteria between cleans.
  • It takes impact. A rigid mineral-filled core resists the trolley knocks, luggage and door swings that mark plasterboard and crack tile.

Which commercial sectors specify it?

Hotels and hospitality. Bathroom pods and en suites are the obvious application: full-height panels in a 2900 x 1200 mm format clad a shower wall with no horizontal joint and no grout to maintain across a 200-room estate. Healthcare and care homes. Non-porous, seamless, chemically cleanable surfaces are the baseline requirement in clinical and assisted-bathing environments. Grout is a liability in those settings for infection-control reasons before it is a maintenance one.

Gyms, pools and leisure. Changing rooms and wet areas take constant water and constant chemical cleaning, which is precisely the combination that destroys decorative finishes. This is SPC's strongest case.

Retail and showroom. Here the driver is usually programme rather than water. A retail unit that has to trade on a fixed date benefits from a wall finish that goes up dry and does not need setting time.

Student accommodation and build-to-rent. High repetition, high turnover, low tolerance for maintenance callouts. The economics of avoiding grout re-raking across hundreds of identical bathrooms are straightforward.

How does install speed compare with tiling?

Tiling a shower enclosure is a sequenced wet trade: tank the substrate, wait, set out, tile, wait for adhesive cure, grout, wait, seal. Each stage has a setting time and the room is unavailable throughout. On a hotel refurbishment that is room-nights lost.

SPC is a dry fix. Panels are cut, adhesive is applied, sheets are set and the junctions are sealed. A two-person team clads a typical hotel bathroom in a fraction of the tiling programme, and the wall is finished the same day rather than after a cure sequence. Fewer wet trades on site also means fewer sequencing dependencies with the mechanical and electrical programme.

The saving is real but it is not free. Sheet work demands accurate cutting because there is no grout joint to hide a discrepancy, and wet-zone junctions have to be detailed and sealed properly or the waterproof core is irrelevant. Method is covered in how to install SPC wall panels.

What does the range offer for specification?

Tysten SPC runs to 33 panels across six series: Granite, Slate, Sandstone, Travertine, Line Series and Wood. In practice, hospitality bathrooms tend towards travertine and sandstone, healthcare and washrooms towards the bright granites such as Granite 8081 where light amplification matters, and hotel corridors or lobbies towards the wood-effect panels such as Wood Series 6710 where warmth is wanted in a surface that still cleans hard.

How does the MOQ 100 model fit project procurement?

Tysten SPC is supplied as a trade and bulk product: minimum order 100 sheets, delivered direct to site or to a contractor yard. In area that is 288 m2 in the 2400mm format or 348 m2 in the 2900mm format. Ordering detail sits on the Tysten SPC page.

For a fit-out this is rarely a constraint. A 40-bathroom hotel floor, a leisure centre changing block or a student scheme will exceed 100 sheets on the first take-off. What it does require is that quantities are settled at procurement rather than trickled in, so build a sensible wastage allowance into the order. Sheet products generate more offcut than tile, particularly on walls with door openings, sanitaryware penetrations and service risers.

The model does not suit refurbishment work drawn down room by room over months, and it does not suit a single-unit project. If you need 30 m2, this is the wrong purchase however well the material performs.

Where should SPC not be specified?

It contributes nothing acoustically. A corridor or dining room with a reverberation problem needs a fibrous absorber, not a hard sheet; that is a different specification, discussed in our commercial wall panel specification guide. It will not follow a curved wall or a column, where flexible MCM tile is the correct product. It is polymer-based, so it should not be used against a direct heat source such as a commercial hob line. And where fire performance to a specific EN 13501 class is a stated requirement for the wall build-up, confirm the certification for the exact thickness before it goes on a drawing rather than assuming it.
