Acoustic Panels for Sports Halls: Impact-Resistant Wood Wool Ceilings

Sports halls are acoustically brutal: huge volumes, hard floors and walls, and constant impact noise. Without treatment, reverberation times are long, whistles and shouts blur together, and the space becomes exhausting to use. Wood wool cement board (WWCB) is one of the few acoustic materials that combines genuine sound absorption with the toughness a sports environment demands.

Why wood wool works in sports halls

• Impact resistance. Unlike soft foam or fabric-wrapped panels, the cement-bonded surface of WWCB withstands ball strikes and knocks — critical at the lower levels of a sports wall. Higher zones and ceilings handle the bulk of the absorption.
• Large-area absorption. Sonablock achieves αw 0.70–0.85, and with panels up to 2400 × 600 mm you can cover large ceiling and wall areas efficiently.
• Fire safety. Sports and assembly halls double as gathering spaces with strict fire rules. Sonablock is Class B-s1,d0 to EN 13501-1.
• Durability and low maintenance. WWCB does not sag, rot or degrade in humid, high-use environments — a long-life solution for facilities managers.

Design guidance

A common approach: full or rafted WWCB ceiling for primary absorption, plus high-level wall panels above impact height. For ball-impact zones, specify mechanically fixed panels and check local standards for sports surfaces. A 25–50 mm air gap behind the panels boosts low-frequency absorption, which helps tame the boom of large halls.
